about

“Take care of your mother, your sister, my daughter. I love you bub...”

These where the last words said to me before my father was deployed in 2006. It was then that the severity of the situation hit. Being fifteen, almost sixteen, and handed the responsibility of taking care of a family was an eye opening and heavy hitting moment. It was from that feeling that I sat down and wrote “Soldier”. I was disgusted with the lack of care or concern for the thousands of soldiers and their families going through the same turmoil. Luckily for my family, my father made it home okay, not to say that the events seen did not change him.

As a younger teen, I was always confused how there could be homeless veterans. But now I've come to understand that the lack of attention given to mental health is one of the leading causes. Without comprehensive reform we can't help the thousands of wounded soldiers that are flooding into the streets. “Soldier” was written thirteen years ago, and only now have we been given the chance to preserve it and release it. I was hopeful, young, and naive to think that when we got around to releasing this song it would be an outdated subject, and be fixed. But as it goes, I was proven wrong. Nothing has changed; the same problems exist and it has spanned from my generation to the next. This song was written and is still sung in defense of veterans who have been forgotten. It also goes out to the families who have lost their mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, or friends to the struggles.

lyrics

Soldier

I’m a soldier who’s been fighting here free
I’m a soldier who’s been fighting here greed
I’m a soldier who’s been forgotten overseas
I’m a soldier and you don’t give a fuck about me

American people forget about war
But I’m the one who’s stuck living with it
And half the population doesn’t give a fuck
Cuz’ now I’m illiterate and my job’s been given up

Chorus 1:
Get the fuck out of this home
That’s right leave the brilliant, Red, white, and blue
The stars have fallen to the ground
And the flames are burning north to go
GO!

People in the bar are sipping life away
But I’m the one stuck with this, this fucking memory
Of carrying a rifle in my hand
And the strain of a 600 pound pack

Chorus 2:
Get the fuck out of this home
That’s right get away, I've got to get away
The stars have fallen to the ground
And the flame is burning north to go

I’m a soldier on the front lines dying, dying for your free
I’m a soldier on the front lines dying, dying for your greed
I’m a soldier on the front lines dying, dying overseas
I’m a soldier on the front lines and you don’t give a fuck about me

When I come home and look at the veteran’s parks
It shows that our nation doesn’t give a fuck
We’ve been butchered and fed to the dogs
And I will never fight for you

Chorus 3:
Get the fuck out of this home
That’s right leave the brilliant Red, white, and blue
The stars have fallen to the ground
And the flames burning north to go

Get the fuck out of this home
That’s right leave the brilliant Red,White, and Blue
These stars have fallen to the ground
As these flames are burning me.
